If you're searching for an out-of-this-world event to take in this summer you might want to check out the 2009 UFO Festival and Symposium in Shag Harbour on Aug. 14/15.
This is the third year for the event and organizers are anticipating more visitors than ever.
A slash in the entry price for this year's symposium is expected to help. Last year close to 50 registered at 35/each. This year's price for the symposium is 10. Four UFO speakers/researchers, half the number of presenters for 2008, have been booked to cut costs.
"Last year we had eight speakers that we had to pay for, plus their gas mileage and a flight from the U.S. for one speaker," said Cindy Nickerson, chair of the Shag Harbour Incident Society. The organization broke even thanks to funding and residents who hosted speakers.
On Friday, Aug. 14 the action starts at the UFO museum centre in Shag Harbour at 9 a.m. with displays by local artists: Jillian Kendrick (Shag Harbour Sea Glass); John Cameron paintings and Ruth Rocks, a local folk artist who paints aliens on rocks. The UFO researchers will also be selling copies of their books.
At 10 a.m. a press conference is scheduled, followed by a barbecue at 11 a.m. and entertainment by Dale Nickerson. At 1 p.m.
Chris Styles will preview his new book.
"We recommend that people bring lawn chairs so they'll be able to sit for the afternoon," said Nickerson.
At 3 p.m. there will be a draw for four to win a lobster supper with the researchers. At 5 p.m. the supper will be served at the Stage Coach Inn (cost to be announced).
On Saturday, Aug. 15, the UFO centre opens at 10 a.m. The symposium starts at the Island and Barrington Fire Hall at 9:15 a.m. with David Cvet, followed by Chris Styles at 10:45 a.m.
An Alien Caf'e will be open for lunch and presenters will have their books for sale along with local artist's wares. At 1 p.m. Don Ledger takes the stage, followed by Stanton Friedman at 2:30 p.m. There will be a panel session hosted by the four presenters at 4:30 p.m.
At 7 p.m. a variety show (cost 5) will be held at the Island and Barrington Fire Hall with several musical acts, a comedian and Chris Styles performing. Participants are encouraged to enter the Alien Costume Contest and dress up as anything related to space. There will be a prize for the best costume.
Nickerson says "loads of people" have been emailing and phoning about the festival.
"The furthest person that I know of is coming from Denmark and another lady is coming from California. I think the longer that you do this, and the more people that know about it, the more interest there is from people to come."

Good friend and colleague Scotty Littleton joins me, Frank Warren this coming Friday night on The Joiner Report. Although no one can better describe Scotty's experience as a witness to one of the most significant UFO events in history then himself (obviously), former student Caitlin Hammer is a close second. Here is an excerpt of an article The UFO Chronicles published on her behalf back in 2006:"Scotty Littleton awoke to his parents' whispers in the hall. He peeked out and saw his father's pale face. As an air raid warden for his beachfront neighborhood, Scotty's dad had to leave his family and enforce the blackout outside. The shells weren't exploding over the ocean this time, so it couldn't be a drill. But neither could he confirm his fears of a real enemy attack -nobody answered the phone at the Civil Defense Headquarters. Only after he walked into the street for a better view did the air raid siren start up.
Mrs. Littleton's father was staying with the family, and he was slow to get out of bed. Slow to do everything actually. But when Scotty's dad shouted from the doorway, "Mr. Hotchkiss, I think this may be the real thing," the old widower bolted down the basement steps.
Scotty and his mom were too curious to remain underground. Besides, the old man's morning breath is deadlier than falling shells, they thought, and ran back up the stairs to the beach at their back door. The two of them stood side by side, clinging together for warmth, their eyes on the sky. Searchlights focused on what appeared to Scotty's mother as a silvery, lozenge-shaped bug, seemingly paralyzed by the lights, hanging directly over Hermosa Beach.
Glowing shrapnel fell on the beach in front of them, sending the pair back under the eaves for protection. Scotty was so close he could smell the acrid smoke as the shells exploded. His eyes refused to blink and his lower lip dangled. Were the neighbor kids seeing this?
Not far from Strand Street, another air raid warden left his family in the backyard staring skyward. The thing they watched so raptly reminded him of the Graf Zeppelin he'd seen land at Los Angeles' Mines Field in '29, only wider and flatter. He and some neighbors jumped into their cars, tossing a couple of shotguns into the backseat. The object picked up speed and vaulted into the night sky as they followed it, racing down Sepulveda. As it moved away, the warden got one last look at the rectangular silhouette. Three narrow slits, like the gills of a shark, stood out, glow an angry orange-red. And then it was out of range...." C. Scott Littleton Bio
Professor C. Scott Littleton was born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1933 and grew up in Hermosa Beach, CA. He attended Redondo Union High School, Redondo Beach, CA (1946-50), served in the U.S. Army in Japan and Korea (1950-52), and attended El Camino College in Torrance, CA (1952-54), before enrolling at UCLA in 1955, where he received his B.A. (1957), M.A. (1962), and Ph.D. (1965). He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at UCLA in 1957.
An internationally recognized expert in comparative Indo-European mythology and folklore, as well as Japanese religion, Professor Littleton has published extensively on Japanese myth and religion, the origin and distribution of the Arthurian and Holy Grail legends, and the theories of the late French mythologist Georges Dum'ezil. He is the author of The New Comparative Mythology (3rd Edition, University of California Press, 1982) and, with Linda A. Malcor, co-author of From Scythia to Camelot: A Radical Reassessment of the Legends of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and the Holy Grail (Garland, 1994; a revised, paperback edition appeared in 2000). He is the editor of Eastern Wisdom (Henry Holt, 1996), a book surveying the major Asian religions, as well as the author of the chapter on Shinto, the indigenous religion of Japan, and has contributed chapters on Japanese mythology and religion to several other anthologies, including Roy Willis, ed., World Mythology: The Illustrated Guide (Simon ">World Religion: The Illustrated Guide (Oxford University Press, 1998), and Raymond Scupin, ed., Religion and Culture: An Anthropological Focus (Prentice Hall, 2000). A semi-popular book, Shinto: Origins, Rituals, Festivals, Spirits, Sacred Places, was recently published by Oxford University Press (2002). He is the general editor of Mythology: The Illustrated Anthology of World Myth ">Gods, Goddesses, and Mythology (Marshall-Cavendish, 2004).
Littleton has done extensive field work in a Tokyo neighborhood, focusing on its annual matsuri, or Shinto shrine festival, an account of which appeared in an article entitled "The Organization and Management of a Tokyo Shinto Shrine Festival" (Ethnology 25:195202, 1986). He has also studied contemporary Japanese popular culture, focusing on the teenage dancers and rock bands that perform on Sunday afternoons in Tokyo's Yoyogi Park (e.g., "Rituals of Rebellion among Contemporary Japanese Youth: The Outdoor Disco at Tokyo's Yoyogi Park," Religion 17:119131, 1987), and is currently researching the possibility that elements of the Arthurian tradition diffused to China and Japan as well as to Europe from its point of origin in the Trans-Caucasian steppes (e.g., "Yamato-takeru: An 'Arthurian' Hero in Japanese Tradition," Asian Folklore Studies 54:259-274, 1995). He has also researched the extent to which the hallucinogen cannabis sativa played a role at the Oracles of Delphi and Dodona (e.g., "The Pneuma Enthusiastikon: On the Possibility of Hallucinogenic 'Vapors' at Delphi and Dodona." Ethos 14:76-91, 1986).
Littleton's other research interests include nineteenth-century travel accounts-with Horace L. Hotchkiss, he is co-editor of The Diaries of Blakely Wilson: An American Traveler in Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land, 1874-1876 (Mellen Press, 1998)-and occult and paranormal phenomena, with emphasis upon the UFO phenomenon and alien abductions. The latter interest is reflected in his science fiction novel, Phase Two (Red Pill Press, 2009), which concerns alien abductions, and an article entitled, "Divine Rebels, Alien Dissidents: Does the Mythology Surrounding Lucifer, Prometheus, and the Ancient Mesoamerican Deity Qu'etzalcoatl Reflect a Pro-Human Faction in the 'Alien Raj?'" (UFO Magazine 17, No. 2:48-51 ">2500 Strand: Growing up in Hermosa Beach, California, During World War II (Red Pill Press, 2008), which includes a chapter devoted to the "Battle of Los Angeles."
Littleton's articles and reviews have appeared in American Anthropologist, Ethnology, Ethos, Journal of American Folklore, Journal of Asian Studies, Monumenta Nipponica, Journal of Folklore Research, Western Folklore, Asian Folklore Studies, Religion, History of Religions, Natural History, Journal of the Classical Tradition, Cosmos, and The Journal of Indo-European Studies, where he also serves as mythology co-editor. In addition to major essays on Indo-European mythology and the theories of the late Georges Dum'ezil in Mircea Eliade, et al. eds., The Encyclopedia of Religion (Macmillan, 1987, 2004) and Simon Glendinning, ed., The Edinburgh Encyclopedia of Continental Philosophy (Edinburgh University Press, 1999) he has contributed articles on a variety of subjects to The Encyclopedia of Religion and War (Routledge, 2004), The New Dictionary of the History of Ideas (Charles Scribner's Sons, 2004), and several other scholarly encyclopedias and compendia. He is also the author of the basic article on "Mythology" in The World Book Encyclopedia (Scott Fetzer, 1991), as well as over fifty short articles on various mythological subjects in both The World Book Encyclopedia and the Academic American Encyclopedia.
He has received grants and fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies (twice), the American Philosophical Society, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, and has served as a Visiting Fulbright Lecturer at The University of Tokyo and Waseda University (1980-81), Tokyo, Japan, and as a Senior Fulbright Researcher at Waseda University (1994). In 1991 he received The Graham L. Sterling Memorial Award, given annually to a distinguished member of the Occidental College faculty.

I'll say this first that the UFO and Render speechless phenomenon, to me, seems would like a Vast Fiddle. Yeah, I'm a skeptic. When we went to watch the footage converse on the camera it came up sooner than helpless to be in file. Recently, I've seen a lot of talk on here about Ouija boards being bullcrap and "bunk", so I thought that I would share a story that, to me at least, refutes this. Honestly, I suppose if I hadn't had the experience that I had, that I would think they were just toys as well. Certainly in the time since this story happened nothing even close to it has ever happened again, and I've tried multiple times with multiple people. Also, I live with a serious skeptic; my husband. He has told me that he would never believe this story if he didn't know me so intimately, and knows I wouldn't make it up, and if the story hadn't been corroborated by other members of my family who are well beyond trustworthy, so I do understand that some disbelief is going to come in to play here. All I can say is that all of the following is entirely true and you can either take my word or not.
So, this happened when I was about 16 years old. I'm 38 now, so that puts it about 1997 or so. It was New Year's Eve. My parents had a party to go to and, for some reason I can't remember right now, I wasn't going out. My older brother and his partner, along with my oldest sister, all decided to come over and stay in with me. Even at 16 my parents didn't care if I stayed home and got drunk with my much older brother and sister (8 years and 13 years older than I, respectively), so the four of us proceeded to get entirely wasted. Accompanied by a procession of mixed drinks and champagne, we watched the ball drop on TV and did the usual NYE stuff, but after a while we started to get bored and look for things to do. We played some cards, but after a while that got boring as well. I suggested playing with the Ouija board. My friends and I had bought a Ouija board to play with a few weeks earlier and, since my parents were the most "liberal", I was the one hanging onto it at my house. We'd done a little messing around with it, but the usual teenage bullcrap and accusations of pushing the planchette. Nothing had happend up until now.
Being drunk and open minded, the other three agreed and we got out the board. At first we contacted a spirit that claimed to be named "Naomi" and my sister remembered my great grandmother's middle name had been Naomi (she'd hated her first name) and we chatted with the spirit for a while. Nothing momentous was said and certainly not anything that would make your hair stand on end. My parents came in and we stopped playing while my brother had to help haul my drunken mother to bed. After that, my sister and my brother's partner were getting drowsy and both of them decided to crash for the night. My brother and I, however, decided to stay up and keep playing around with the board for a while.
It was nearly 3am at this point. At first, we didn't get anything at all and we sort of stopped asking questions, just talking with our hands resting on the planchette. Then, it began to move. We asked "Who are you?". It answered "Eugene". An unlikely name and we were still fairly drunk, so we laughed at this quite a lot. Eugene seemed like a very nerdy and silly name for a ghost. We asked "Why are you contacting us, Eugene?" We received the answer "Afraid."
That seemed a bit more serious. We asked "Why are you afraid, Eugene?" It replied "Music. Music." over and over. Nonsense. Then we got a series of numbers. Puzzling. My brother had the bright idea to turn on the radio to station indicated by the numbers. To our surprise, there really was a station there. The song "Don't Leave Me Stranded" by Heart was playing. The board immediately started saying "Heart. Heart. Heart." I thought my brother was just playing off of what he was hearing and was screwing with me. Then it started saying "Don't go. Don't leave me. Don't go. Church. Church. Afraid. Don't go." over and over and over. We assured it we weren't going to go, but it dwindled into nonsense after a while. It was getting really late (early?) and we decided to go to bed.
The next morning, which was nearer to afternoon, we were having New Year's Day breakfast when the phone rang. My dad answered it and went off into the bedroom to talk. We were still eating when he came back out and said it was my grandmother on the phone. Apparently her brother Eugene in Arizona, whom we weren't even aware of the existence of, had had a heart attack the night before. He had died multiple times on the table during the night and had to be revived. We were stunned. We told my dad the entire story and he was flabbergasted.
A day or two later, my grandmother called again to update my dad, and he told her the story. She was stunned into silence. She said that, when Eugene had regained consciousness, the first thing he had said was that he was so afraid for his soul because he hadn't been to church in 20 years and he wanted to go to church immediately and have a preacher come in. It was almost as if we had been some sort of lifeline for him that night.

TEENAGER ATTACKED BY BULL SHARK
A New Jersey teenager is lucky to be alive after a bull shark attacked him while he was in Florida.
"I have a large puncture wound that left a hole this big and underneath that. I have three little tiny teeth marks," said Christian Mercurio.
17-year-old Christian Mercurio had the scare of his life while fishing on the shore.
"I felt like I was being bitten by something so I just kicked whatever it was and it bit my left foot," said Mercurio.

The Randolph, New Jersey teen was on vacation with his family in Sanibel Island, Florida when he felt the shark bite him and pull him. The bleeding wouldn't stop. It's a feeling he can't shake.
"It's like a large amount of pressure, it feels like cinder blocks are falling on your legs," said Mercurio.
"I just ripped my leg out of the sharks mouth and started running to shore."
"I just wanted to make sure he was safe and not bleeding and then it started to sink in."
Thankfully, Christian's mother, Lisa, is a nurse who likely saved her son's life and limbs by quickly wrapping him up.
"We realized when got to the hospital we were pretty lucky," said Lisa Mercurio.
The family said it was a bull shark about six to eight feet long. Mercurio can't walk right now, but that's not what he's focusing on. He's also not giving up the water or fishing because of his brush with death.
"So many things could have gone wrong, I could have lost my foot or arm ore life, I'm just really glad that I'm still alive and with my family," said Mercurio.

A minute or so goes by and I find myself gazing at it again. It has become much closer to my location and has another red orb of light pulsating steadily close to the constant red orb of light I first noticed. I watched these lights cross over my entire field of view in under a couple of minutes. Still not too sure as to what aircraft has only the red light that pulsates like so and creates no noise at all. Last night was one of the quietest nights I think I have ever experienced in this city. If anyone has any input as to what this UFO could be please share.
