Stuart Miller, editor and publisher of Alien Worlds Magazine, kindly sent us a copy of the first issue of his latest project, a reincarnation of his previous eNewsletter UFO Review, now in hard copy under it's new title Alien Worlds. Thanks Stuart. It contains an unorthodox content mix emerging from the convergence of three disciplines involved in the search for alien life; UFOs, astrobiology and SETI, the latter posing as the high priest of space exploration so we can understand why Stuart included SETI (well almost).
Initially you might wonder what these three have in common. Astrobiology searches for intelligent life holding that if it exists it is far, far away or only microbial in form; SETI which holds that if ET life does exist it is also far, far away, so far in fact that it's not much use worrying about it; while Ufology claims alien life exists as sentient life forms that visit Earth for a variety of reasons right under our nose even though very few take any notice of it.
The quest then for the editor of Alien Worlds will be to weave this combination into something that will be of value for UFO research given that any ufologist worth their weight already remains abreast of SETI and astrobiology "discoveries". He'll also be charged with unearthing if this mix will appeal to anyone in the UFO field besides those that take the "scientific approach only" to Ufology, or miracles of miracles, if it will help birth what anxiously paces outside the UFO delivery room - a wholistic approach to the UFO subject. A challenging quest indeed.
If it is to be the latter then there seems that some other essential components might need to be added to this brew, that is, information from the behavioural sciences, neuroscience and consciousness research. One could also add a splash of the esoteric, since many ancient esoteric ideas now seem to harmonise with modern day quantum physics, string theory and super position hypothesis, just to name a few. In our opinion this would cover all the bases giving a true eclectic approach to the subject, if that were to be the ultimate goal.
Stuart has taken on a great challenge which causes us to wonder whether 2 years down the track he will remain true to the direction Alien Worlds set out to steer. After all, when one rubs shoulders with scientific conditioning for a while it is bound to rub off eventually leaving one akin to the subject in the boiled frog experiment. So the questions remain.... will Stuart remain wide-eyed, bushy-tailed and full of objective wonder? Will scientifically oriented UFO veterans find the magazine "dry" enough? More importantly will it be enough to keep the interest of UFO buffs, researchers, experiencers and the interested UFO public piqued, given they appear to be the magazines target market and that scientists probably won't read this magazine? All good questions that only time will tell.

Are there Aliens? Stephen Hawking believes so. He has a long-held belief that intelligent aliens are more than likely going to exist. He also believes if an intlelligent extraterrestrial life form visited are planet Earth in the present-day humanity would have very unfortunate consequences for us.

In the last three years Stephen Hawking has been working on a documantary that is reportedyl exercising firm editorial control. The show will feature speculative scenes of possible alien life in different habitats, including the oeans of europa on the moon of jupiter.
Hawking considers that any alien life would be generally the same as the life which has existed on earth, such as microbes or simple animal forms.

He even considers the possibility of this intelligent life been so technoligically advanced it can easily travel across interstellar distances. He thinks it is unwise for humanity to try and attract the attention of such voyagers, by using the controversial practice of beaming out Active SETI signals, for instance.

The idea of massive alien spaceships moving across the galaxy from star to star at a small fraction of the speed of light is a common movie about science-fiction. There could be a possibility for a ship and its technology to be primitive enough that aliens may need "resources" from our planet.
Alternatively these aliens may have originally evolved on an earthlike world, there goal may be just to seize and colonise ours, regardless of the situation on there home planet they may just want another. The fact that these aliens could possible cross interstellar distances would tend to suggest they have the technology to wipe out humanity or enslave us.
Given that those parts of humanity with resources to spare show no serious interest in developing space travel capabilities of our own, it would seem that Prof Hawking is right and we'd do well to keep our heads down least we draw the attention of some race a bit more interested in the universe around it.
Timing is everything, and as I have suggested before, extraterrestrials who want to make contact with humans would be advised to choose their moment carefully. One would imagine that it would be best to make contact with humans who can properly focus on the challenges of First Contact with an alien civilization. Distractions may seem like a minor point when it comes to the enormity and significance of First Contact. But there have been periods in human history during which aliens would want to avoid making contact. Examples? How about during World War Two? You have many nations involved in horrible conflict and technology developing that promises new ways to kill people on a mass scale. As a visiting alien do you really want to step into that? Nations involved in the conflict could hardly take the time to properly handle such an interaction. Most likely, they would want nothing more from the relationship than technology to better kill people on the other side of their conflict. Here's another example: the Cold War. During the darkest days of the Cold War the United States and the Soviet Union were on a hair-trigger response to threat. A visiting extraterrestrial craft could provoke a dangerous response. Paranoia would enter into the picture. Each side could believe that extraterrestrials were a ploy on the part of the other.These are extreme examples. Others may appear quite mundane in comparison, and yet still provide a significant reason for aliens to stay away. The latest would be the battle in the United States Congress over the budget and the debt ceiling. At first blush this might seem like a national issue. But in the larger scheme of things, the US Government defaulting on it's debt obligations would have a huge impact on world economic markets, both in reality and perhaps more importantly, psychologically. Instability is a dangerous thing, no matter how it comes about. Instability requires hard work on the part of humans to solve specific challenges. Those efforts would make it tough to respond to significant new challenges. Extraterrestrial First Contact of any type would be a significant world challenge.Now it would be easy to claim that all sorts of issues on planet Earth are a reason for aliens to leave us alone. And one could then jump to the conclusion that this could be the reason for the "Eerie Silence" as Paul Davies has put it. But, as in all speculation, there is no evidence. Intelligent aliens may be too far away to even realize we are here. Or they just might not care to make contact. Or they may be waiting for us to make contact. If that changes, and some day extraterrestrials decide to say hello, they might be well advised to keep an eye on the news of the day. Sometimes humans just have too much on their collective plate to handle. Do Aliens Exist? 5 Signs they Just Might Whether aliens exist or not is a question that everyone has been pondering over for quite a few years now. There are a lot of eminent people who insist that aliens are real and support their claim with a lot of very convincing examples. Aliens visiting the Earth and befriending or destroying mankind has been a topic of many popular science-fiction movies and every time we come out of a movie theater after watching a film that is alien centered we end up asking ourselves 'do aliens exist?', 'are aliens real?'. Well, films aside, there is now some pretty scientific proof that aliens actually do exist and we might just be visited by our friends from other planets sometime in the future. 5 Convincing Proofs 1) With numerous stars, alien life is probable: Although there is no direct proof the aliens exist, it is notable that the universe is home to a lot of stars and past research has shown that at least 50% of these stars harbor planets. Scientists have estimated that there are about a trillion planets in the Milky Way alone. It is very much possible that at least some out of these planets have undergone changes like the Earth and developed life. 2) Water occurs on planets other than Earth: Water, as we all know, is very important for life and research has revealed that liquid water is pretty common in our solar system. Scientists have shared evidence of existence of water on Mars. Europe (one of the moons of Jupiter) also seems to have an ocean in liquid form. Evidence of water has also been found on Venus, Titan and Enceladus (Saturn's moons) and Jovian moons Ganymede and Callisto. 3) Life in earth evolved real quickly: Earth's age has often been estimated at about 4.5 billion years. With regards to the earliest evidence for life, it comes from 3.4 billion year old mats of bacteria found in Australia (known as stromatolites). Scientists have time and again insisted that even bacteria are biologically complex and there are good chances that the ones in Australia arose from a life form that landed on Earth even earlier. 4) Life seems to thrive in extreme conditions: Almost everywhere that scientist go on Earth, no matter how deep, dark or extreme the conditions, they end up finding life. Life can exist in the toughest of conditions and there are good chances that the universe is filled with living places that are tough and extreme. Mars is said to have a very harsh environment, but there are some microbes on Earth that can easily survive in places with harsh conditions. 5) Incoming signals: Scientists looking for answers to questions like do aliens exist and are aliens real frequently harness some of the largest radio telescopes in the world to find some signal that aliens might be trying to communicate with us. Some of the evidence has raised alarm, but it has often been dismissed as 'human interference'. The most convincing signal, however, was recorded on August 15, 1977 during a search that was carried at the Big Ear Observatory at the Ohio State University. The signal has never been explained but when recorded, it amazed scientists enough to write 'Wow!' on the printout of the same. A look at these very convincing proofs would lead us to strongly believe that aliens, in fact, do exist and they are very real. It's largely a technical achievement, but it augurs well for the chances of finding life trillions of miles from Earth.A team of mostly Dutch astronomers have used the Very Large Telescope -- situated atop a barren ridge in the Chilean Andes -- to examine a planet hugging the star Tau Bootis, 51 light-years away. The planet is hellishly hot and impressively hefty; it packs the mass of a half-dozen Jupiters. But the truly interesting thing is that the VLT was able to detect this world's elusive infrared glow. Applying a bit of spectral analysis, the team uncovered carbon monoxide in its atmosphere.Now carbon monoxide, familiar to many as a noxious tail pipe emission, is just another of the simple molecules that are as common as clover in the cosmos. No biggie. But could this same technique be used to find biologically relevant gases, such as ozone (a form of oxygen) or methane? If so, it would be a method for discovering life from afar.Frankly, today's telescopes would have a hard time pulling this off. But new, outsized instruments sporting mirror diameters of 100 feet or more are in the offing. They're complex and they're costly, but they're also game changers, and could offer a life-detection scheme as promising as sending people or probes to Mars.Which brings me back to the summer of 2006, when I was preparing a talk about the search for extraterrestrial life for a group near San Francisco. The newspapers were thick with stories relevant to biology beyond Earth: ice on Mars, discovery of a few more planets, etc. If you paid attention to it all, you'd be swamped. But it struck me that by stepping back from this daily dose of astronomical revelation, it was clear that all these stories neatly fell into three categories -- three approaches to determining if there's anything alive out there.In other words, there's a three-way horse race to discover extraterrestrial life. For your consideration and contemplation, I list this trio of trotters below:1. DISCOVER LIFE NEARBY. This is horse number one, and where you'll find the big effort and the big money. National space agencies back this nag by sending probes that might eventually ferret out microbes in the dark aquifers beneath Mars' sterile landscape, or in the hidden oceans of such moons as Europa, Callisto, Ganymede, Titan or Enceladus.This is the search for life in our solar system, a holy grail ever since Galileo first swung a telescope towards the moon. But so far, no joy. Despite tantalizing suggestions of fossilized microbes in meteorites, puzzling and possibly biogenic methane gas in the martian atmosphere, and a long-standing controversy over the Viking lander experiments of nearly 40 years ago, there's still no Exhibit A that points unequivocally to biology in our own back yard.Nonetheless, the search goes on, becoming ever more extensive and more sophisticated. It's like Prince Henry the Navigator, sending ship after ship into the South Atlantic, hoping to find a route to the East. He eventually succeeded, and maybe we will too.2. SNIFF IT OUT. Horse number two is the strategy described at the start of this article. A decade ago, NASA had plans to build a space-based, infrared telescope called the Terrestrial Planet Finder. It could both image exoplanets as well as do the sort of spectral analysis that might detect atmospheric gases caused by biology. Alas, the TPF is presently in a state of "indefinite hold," which many researchers think is a euphemism for "rigor mortis".But the idea is good, and either something like the TPF will eventually fly, or the humongous telescopes currently on the drawing boards will use their cyclopean mirrors to search out life around other stars by sensing its exhaust gases.3. EAVESDROP ON ET. Otherwise known as SETI, this third horse is an effort to detect radio signals or laser flashes from technically savvy extraterrestrials. The down side? Life able to build transmitters or lasers is surely less widespread than the type of single-celled organisms that might be discovered by schemes 1 and 2. So SETI will have to search farther and wider to win this race. The up side? It could, in principle, succeed tomorrow.Of course, some folks consider SETI a long shot. But it offers a big payoff if it noses across the finish line first: Namely, life (or at least intelligence) that could have something interesting to say.So what are the chances that "any "of these horses will make it into the stretch?That's a big guess of course, and not much more than a guess. But unless you think that life is highly improbable -- that in a galaxy filled with planets and the basic molecules of biology, life only seldom appears -- then it's hard to believe that all three of these horses will scratch.As to who's favored to prance into the winner's circle, my opinion is that, "a prior"i, each of the contenders boasts roughly equal odds. In the next two decades, we'll see yet more robotic explorers on Mars, and possibly even on the more seductive satellites of the outer solar system. That's good news for horse one. But within the same time frame, large telescopes and possibly a cousin to the Terrestrial Planet Finder will be analyzing the light from planets around nearby stars. And SETI experiments -- assuming that continued funding can be found -- will increase the number of stellar systems examined by a factor of a thousand.So the next time you check out the myriad science stories here and elsewhere that pertain to the matter of life beyond Earth, consider this simple way to categorize their relevance. The field is small, the contenders well-matched, and the horses are out of the gate.
