US pilots found what they were looking for at Groom Lake, a desert salt flat, on April 12, 1955, according to "The Central Intelligence Agency and Overhead Reconnaissance," an internal CIA history of the U-2, written by Gregory W. Pedlow and Donald E. Welzenbach.
"President Eisenhower also approved the addition of this strip of wasteland, known by its map designation as Area 51, to the Nevada Test Site," the authors wrote.
The U-2 spy plane flew at an altitude of 70,000 feet, which made some believe UFOs were buzzing Earth.
"High-altitude testing of the U-2 soon led to an unexpected side effect - a tremendous increase in reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs)," the report states.
Richelson says the new document shows the CIA is becoming less secretive about Area 51's existence, and the activities that took place there.
"It marks an end of official secrecy about the facts of Area 51," he told The Las Vegas Sun. "It opens up the possibility that future accounts of this and other aerial projects will be less redacted, more fully explained in terms of their presence in Area 51."
However, judging by the number of conspiracy theories involving Area 51, the release of the information may only serve to intensify rumors as to what else may have taken place on this lonely stretch of wasteland in the Nevada desert, which remains off-limits to this day.

It didn't end there. My room number was 1163. Only a day before my flight, I was working on an article on the JFK assassination and its alleged UFO links. When was JFK shot? November 1963. Or: 11/63. My room: 1163.
After crashing out for a while and pondering on the high-strangeness that was afoot, good mate Greg Bishop came over to the hotel and we drove back to his place, chatted, caught up, and then went and got an early dinner, as we were going to do Greg's radio show - "RADIO MISTERIOSO" - that night.
Before the show, Greg shared with me a veritable treasure-trove of UFO-themed material he had acquired some years ago, contained in which was a copy of the FBI's file on infamous Contactee, George Hunt Williamson.
I wish I had had this file when I wrote my "ON THE TRAIL OF THE SAUCER SPIES" book (since it told a great deal of how the US Government spied on the UFO community), but I will do a lengthier post on the entire file at a later date, as it contains some classic gems and hilarious nuggets of data from the early years of Saucerdom.
At this point, I should explain that although the file was titled "GEORGE HUNT WILLIAMSON" a significant portion of its pages were devoted to yet another Contactee - an equally controversial one - Truman Bethurum.
I wrote extensively about Bethurum in my "CONTACTEES" book. He was the lucky geezer who claimed flirty encounters in the Nevada desert in 1952/53 with a hot alien space-babe known as Captain Aura Rhanes from the planet Clarion (yes, the usual wacky and absurd Space-Brother stuff that no-one should take literally - although I do believe something of A HYPNAGOGIC NATURE occurred to Bethurum).
Old Truman was quite taken by Aura, who he described as being "tops in shapeliness and beauty" and whose space-outfit "did fit so snuggly." There's really not much I can add to that, except...
It seems that the FBI was quite taken by Her Royal Hotness from the stars, too. In the papers on Bethurum, an FBI agent (whose name is blacked out on the available files) relates the story of how Bethurum met hotty Aura, who is described as - and I quote the Bureau - "...a ravishing woman commandant."
I have to wonder what was going through the mind of the agent writing that! (See the top of this post for an extract from the FBI files on Bethurum.)
Then, after digging into the file, it was time for Greg's show, in which we covered everything from the aforementioned oddness at the hotel, the Aura Rhanes saga, the state of paranormal-themed TV (a clue: it's all rubbish), and much more of a controversial and Fortean nature.
Finally, there was the trip back to the hotel, before an early Monday morning flight back to Dallas.
So, that was my weird weekend, one which involved an encounter with Charles Fort, the JFK assassination, a space-captain from a far-away world, and the FBI.
Do you even get the feeling that our "reality" is just a big joke on the part of some deranged computer-programmer in a strange and unearthly dimension of "MATRIX"-style proportions? Perhaps I took too many red pills...

Bill, as we shall refer to him, is a thirty-two year old computer programmer for a major scientific-engineering corporation that helped design the major components for the new NASA Hubble space telescope. On July 19, 1984, at about 10:30 p.m. Bill left work and headed west on Highway I-84. As he approached the Taconic Parkway ramp in Dutchess County, NY he noticed a very bright, almost circular, object off to the north. The object seemed to be just sitting there in the sky. Its lights were a very bright white. As Bill watched the object, it began to move and it was at that time he noticed a dark mass behind it which blocked out the brighter, light polluted, night sky. He continued to drive on 84 and soon lost sight of the object. He tried to brush the entire incident out of his mind thinking, "Oh it must have been those guys from Stormville flying those planes and trying to fake a UFO." Bill then drove on listening to his radio.
He then turned off the Route 52 exit near Stormville, NY, and began traveling north. The time now was close to eleven p.m. and the roads were quite desolate. He came to a clearing where there was a large field and noticed a large dark mass sitting about 200 yards from the road. At first he thought that it was a new home, but then he realized there couldn't be a house there since he had gone this way just the night before and the field was empty. As a matter of fact, Bill always drove this way home and there never was a structure there.
Bill slowed down his car to get a better look. "This thing was huge and dark," he noticed. The strange thing was it was almost the same shape as a big barn, but it seemed more tapered toward the sides and very smooth. As he watched, the dark object rose into the air without a sound. This really upset Bill since his was the only car on the road. The object then rose higher and higher, and all Bill could see was the dark mass slowly rising into the air. It was now about twice as high as the trees and was moving slowly toward Bill who was still in the car. Bill's radio then started to sound "funny" like the music on the radio was coming out of a tape player that had very weak batteries. The voices and the music sounded out of tune.
Bill then put his car into gear and sped away from the object. His heart was racing as he drove up the road at over fifty miles an hour. Bill then lost sight of the object and continued to drive at a slower rate of speed. After several minutes he noticed the glow up ahead just over a hill. As he approached the crest of the hill the object was waiting there! It was about 300 feet above the trees and was all lit up with rows of white and yellow lights. Bill then stopped his car and turned off his engine and lights. He was hoping that whoever was in the thing would not see him. The object then turned off its lights and he could see this huge dark mass slowly drifting toward him. When the object passed directly over his car, he could see its shape was triangular. Bill told me, "I don't want to make light of this, but the ship looked like one of the star destroyers from the movie Star Wars. The underside was the same shape,although I did not see the top."
As the object passed over Bill, he looked up and saw several circular areas underneath the UFO which seemed to be like tunnels leading into the object. Inside these circular tunnels there was a white light flashing, similar to the flashing of a strobe. (Previously, we have had several reports of this same type of white flashing effect from other CE cases in the Hudson Valley.) The circular areas have also been reported numerous times before. Bill told me there was no sound. He estimated its size to be at least 300 feet from end to end.
Then something strange took place. The last thing Bill remembers is watching it go over his car, as he did not see it leave. The next thing he knew he was at the bottom of the hill 600 feet from where he was when the UFO first passed over his parked auto. The object itself was gone. He was not positive what time it was when he saw the object overhead, but he feels it was most likely about 11:30 p.m. The time was 12:15 a.m. when Bill started his drive home upset and with a very stiff neck.
When he arrived home he told his wife about his sighting. She was worried to begin with since he was almost an hour late. Later, Bill woke up in the middle of the night screaming, "Get away from me! -- Get away from me!" His wife said that the nightmares continued at least twice a week. Bill told me that he was not sure of what the nightmare was all about, but he knew something was after him. As time went on Bill was afraid to drive alone at night. He even had to insist that his boss not put him on the evening or night shift at his job.
Finally, Bill wanted to find outmore since the experience of the UFO and the fearful dreams tormented him. It wasn't until 1987 that Bill contacted me and told me his story. Bill had seen Budd Hopkins on a number of talk shows and asked me if it would be possible for him to be hypnotized. Hearing Budd speak about abductions on TV made him fearful and he wanted to make sure that this had not happened to him. I arranged to have Bill meet with a certified psychologist whom I occasionally used to perform hypnosis. The following is a brief transcript of Bill's encounter under hypnosis. He first told of seeing the object on I-84, then in the field, and then in the sky over the hill. At this point his voice becomes filled with fear and emotion.
Bill: "I see it now. It's that thing! Its coming in my direction! I'm going to turn off my car lights, maybe they won't see me and go away. Its huge... Oh my God what is it? There is someone standing in the road and he's walking toward the car. Who are you? He's saying something to me 'Don't be fearful we need you... you have been selected.' Selected for what? Get away! I feel strange like I'm floating in the air. Its all dark. I am now on this table and these guys are all around me. There are six of them. Two are at my head and two on the sides (two on each side). My legs and arms are like dead weights -- I can't move them."
Bill is then asked to describe the beings in greater detail. "These guys are small. They have large heads with round eyes. The eyes are all black. I can see no pupils in them, they remind me of sharks eyes. They are dressed in some type of black and white skin type suits. I can't see their hands. The one at my head is moving some type of device that looks like a portable car vacuum cleaner up and down the left side of my head. It vibrates my entire head, it feels like a drill going through my head... STOP! It hurts.... He tells me that they are looking for something and havefound it.
"I now can feel my legs and arms, and they are allowing me to get up. They are very small only up to the bottom part of my chest (Bill is six foot one inch tall). The others are now over some type of panel. Two of them are leading me by the arms. I asked them where they are from. The one on my right says, "We are from here." I didn't understand the answer. I asked him if they planned to let me go to which he replies, "Yes, but we will see you again." He told me that they need us because they have trouble living in our world. He said they come from a place which is very ugly when compared to our world and they would rather live here, but can't. I told him that I would remember and tell every one about this. He said I would remember in time but there are forces which will stop you from telling anyone about this experience.
Bill then found himself back in his car. Bill now recalls every aspect of the experience, which to him is very real.

An hour-long late night encounter on a South Canterbury back road has convinced the Thew family of Temuka that unidentified flying objects do exist.
Mr and Mrs Ken Thew yesterday described how a multi-coloured flying object paced them along the Waitohi Road in the early hours of the morning of July 12, approaching to within 120 yards of their car and changing colours as it went.
Mr Thew, a motor mechanic, said they had always had an open mind on UFOs before their encounter, but were now convinced such phenomena existed.
Mrs Thew said they knew by the hour of the night, the manoeuvres and closeness of the object that it was not an aeroplane.
While Mrs Thew was frightened by the encounter and wanted to drive faster, her husband wanted her to pull over to the roadside to get a better view of the object.
They were returning to Temuka from Pleasant Point with their three daughters.
Mrs Thew, who was driving, said she thought the lights were a reflection on the wet windows. But after winding down the window, the couple could still clearly see the object.
They said it seemed to be approaching the car, then abruptly stopped about 200 to 300 metres away, then changed direction and began to pace the car.
"The sight itself didn't frighten me, but the car's speedo told the story of how my wife felt," Mr Thew said.
"When we opened the car window and the object came closer to the car, it was something we had never seen before.
There was no noise and it was quite apparent this was a controllable flying object."
Both Mrs Thew and her eldest daughter were intrigued by what seemed like the shape of a "... a figure eight" which seemed to be outside the object.

"It was a bit frightening for a start. We were just travelling home from a night at me cobber's place. The oldest girl said, `what's that over there?' and I said I had no idea."

"They got the kids to draw pictures of what they saw," Mr Thew said.
Most of the responses they got were positive; people called them to ask them about the incident, and later a Polish professor visited them to learn more about their experience. Their story attracted a small negative response, with about five calls from people suggesting they were mad, he said.
However, Mr Thew stands by what he saw.
