Credit: NASA/JPL-CaltechView full size imageCuriosity's extensive size allows it to carry a host of scientific experiments that will be able to zap, analyze and take pictures of any rock within reach of its 7-foot (2 meters) arm. Curiosity is about the size of a small SUV. It is 9 feet 10 inches long by 9 feet 1 inch wide (3 m by 2.8 m) and about 7 feet high (2.1 m). It weighs 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms). Curiosity's wheels have a 20-inch (50.8 cm) diameter.Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory designed the rover to roll over obstacles up to 25 inches (65 centimeters) high and to travel about 660 feet (200 meters) per day. The rover's power comes from a multimission radioisotope thermoelectric generator, which produces electricity from the heat of plutonium-238's radioactive decay. The power supply should last a full Martian year (687 Earth days) or more.
A COMPLICATED LANDING
The 2.5-billion MSL spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Nov. 26, 2011, and arrived on Mars on Aug. 6, 2012, after a daring landing sequence that NASA dubbed "Seven Minutes of Terror." Because of Curiosity's weight, NASA determined that the past method of using a rolling method with land bags would probably not work. Instead, the rover went through an extremely complicated sequence of maneuvers to land.
From a fiery entry into the atmosphere, a supersonic parachute needed to deploy to slow the spacecraft down. NASA officials said the parachute would need to withstand 65,000 pounds (29,480 kg) to break the spacecraft's fall to the surface.
Under the parachute, MSL let go of the bottom of its heat shield so that it could get a radar fix on the surface and figure out its altitude.
The parachute could only slow MSL to 200 mph (322 kph), far too fast for landing. To solve the problem, engineers designed the assembly to cut off the parachute, and use rockets for the final part of the landing sequence.
About 60 feet (18 m) above the surface, MSL's "skycrane" deployed. The landing assembly dangled the rover below the rockets using a 20-foot (6 m) tether. Falling at 1.5 mph (2.4 kph), MSL gently touched the ground about the same moment the skycrane severed the link and flew away, crashing into the surface.
NASA personnel tensely watched the rover's descent on live television. When they received confirmation that Curiosity was safe, engineers pumped fists and jumped up and down in jubilation.
News of the landing spread through social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, and traditional outlets such as newspapers and television. One engineer became famous because of the Mohawk he sported on landing day.
PRIMARY MISSION: CAN, OR COULD, MARS SUPPORT LIFE?
Curiosity's prime mission is to determine if Mars is, or was, suitable for life. While it is not designed to find life itself, the rover carries a number of instruments on board that can bring back information about the surrounding environment.
Scientists hit something close to the jackpot in early 2013, when the rover beamed back information showing that Mars had habitable conditionsin the past. Powder from the first drill samples that Curiosity obtained included the elements of sulfur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and carbon, which are all considered "building blocks" or fundamental elements that could support life. While this is not evidence of life itself, the find was still exciting to the scientists involved in the mission.
"A fundamental question for this mission is whether Mars could have supported a habitable environment," stated Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program. "From what we know now, the answer is yes."
TOOLS FOR FINDING CLUES TO LIFE
The rover has a few tools to search for habitability. Among them is an experiment that bombards the surface with neutrinos, which would slow down if they encounter hydrogen atoms: one of the elements of water.
Curiosity's seven-foot arm can pick up samples from the surface and cook them inside the rover, sniffing the gases that come out of there and analyzing them for clues as to how the rocks and soil formed.
The Sample Analysis of Mars instrument, if it does pick up evidence of organic material, can double-check that. On Curiosity's front, under foil covers, are several ceramic blocks infused with artificial organic compounds.
Curiosity can drill into each of these blocks and place a sample into its oven to measure its composition. Researchers will then see if organics appear that were not supposed to be in the block. If so, scientists will likely determine these are organisms hitchhiking from Earth.
High-resolution cameras surrounding the rover take pictures as it moves, providing visual information that can be compared to environments on Earth. This was used when Curiosity found evidence of a streambed, for example.

Besides hunting for habitability, Curiosity has other instruments on board that are designed to learn more about the environment surrounding it. Among those goals is to have a continuous record of weather and radiation observations to determine how suitable the site would be for an eventual human mission.
Curiosity's Radiation Assessment Detector runs for 15 minutes every hour to measure a swath of radiation on the ground and in the atmosphere.
Scientists in particular are interested in measuring "secondary rays" or radiation that can generate lower-energy particles after it hits the gas molecules in the atmosphere. Gamma rays or neutrons generated by this process can cause a risk to humans.
Additionally, an ultraviolet sensor stuck on Curiosity's deck tracks radiation continuously.
The Rover Environmental Monitoring Station measures the wind's speed and chart its direction, as well as determining temperature and humidity in the surrounding air.
The rover is slated to last for at least the next two years, but some commentators say given the longevity of the Spirit and Opportunity missions, Curiosity could be around for the better part of a decade.
Curiosity ran into its first major problem in February 2013, when a computer glitch punted the roving laboratory into safe mode for a few days. The issue caused an interruption of normal science activities, but did not impact the rover's long-term health.
NASA hopes Curiosity will have the chance to climb Aeolis Mons (NASA nicknames it "Mount Sharp"), a 19,000-foot (6,000 m) mountain near the landing site, before the mission's end.

The lights glowed very, very bright. I kept driving, but put my hand up to my eyes so I could not see the craft because I was so scared. I was crying and saying please don't beam me up over and over.
Sounds weird, but that was my reaction. I worked at a local radio station at the time and when I went to work on Monday and told people what I had seen, they were silent and then told me that the same thing had been seen across the lower mainland and over the Island the same night.

Well needless to say, NASA is at it again. They announced that the Mars rover is forgetting its daily data and cannot share it with the public because of that. Hmmm...very convenient NASA, since the rover just entered into an area with a lot of ancient alien archeological site. The Curiosity rover cost over 2.5 billion dollars to make and it has a glitch like this? Hello, I could put a team together in a week that could build a better rover for 10% the cost. A lot of that money went into black ops missions the rover will perform that the public will not be allowed to know. Still have doubts? Have you see the rover wheels? Each of the wheels has 4-8 holes in them the size of quarters. These are metal wheels! Now the rover has only driven 40km. The temperature on Mars is 20 Celsius (70F) during noon, and -150C (-225F) at night, so we know the wheels are not melting.
I've seen NASA do this several times in the past. They say something interesting is about to happened, like a satellite is about to travel through a gutser plume from a planet and it will test the liquid for chemical makeup. Commander Eugene Cernan, Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans, and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt launched at 12:33 a.m. EST on December 7, 1972. While Evans remained in lunar orbit above in the Command/Service Module, Cernan and Schmitt spent just over three days on the lunar surface in the Taurus-Littrow valley, performing three EVAs or moonwalks during which they collected lunar samples and deployed scientific instruments. Cernan, Evans, and Schmitt returned to Earth on December 19 after an approximately 12-day mission.
Apollo 17 remains the most recent manned Moon landing and the most recent manned flight beyond low Earth orbit. It also broke several records set by previous flights, including longest manned lunar landing flight; longest total lunar surface extravehicular activities; largest lunar sample return, and longest time in lunar orbit.
CONSPIRACY THEORY
Different Moon landing conspiracy theories claim that some or all elements of the Apollo program and the associated Moon landings were hoaxes staged by NASA and members of other organizations. Various groups and individuals have made such conspiracy claims since the end of the Apollo program in 1975. The most notable claim is that the six manned landings were faked and that the Apollo astronauts did not walk on the Moon. The conspiracy theorists argue that NASA and others intentionally deceived the public into believing the landings did occur by manufacturing, destroying, or tampering with evidence; including photos, telemetry tapes, transmissions, rock samples, and even some key witnesses themselves. Such claims are common to most of the conspiracy theories.
There is abundant third-party evidence for Apollo Moon landings, and commentators have published detailed rebuttals to the hoax claims. Polls taken in various locations have shown that between 6% and 28% of the people surveyed believed that the manned landings were faked.
PUBLIC OPINION
There are subcultures worldwide which advocate the belief that the Moon landings were faked. James Oberg of ABC News stated that claims made that the Moon landings were faked are actively taught in Cuban schools and wherever Cuban teachers are sent. A 1999 Gallup poll found that 6% of the Americans surveyed doubted that the Moon landings had occurred and that 5% of those surveyed had no opinion on the subject, which roughly matches the findings of a similar 1995 Time/CNN poll. Officials of Fox television stated that such skepticism increased to about 20% after the February 15, 2001 airing of that network's TV show entitled Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon? Seen by approximately 15 million viewers, the 2001 Fox special is viewed as having promoted the hoax claims.
A 2000 poll conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Fund found that 28% of those surveyed did not believe that American astronauts have been on the Moon, and this percentage is roughly equal in all social-demographic groups. In 2009, a poll conducted by the British Engineering ">
CONCLUSION
What is fact, we will never truly know what is really there until commercial space craft visit the planet, (probably according to Virgin in the not too distant future). Whether we have visited the moon or not will be down to speculation and debate, there is an argument for both sides, ultimately it is down to the individual to come up with their own conclusions.

Yes, this is a story that has been circulating for decades and the confirmation of this can be traced back to two ex-NASA employees in particular--Otto Binder and Maurice Chatelain. According to Binder, unnamed radio hams with their own VHF receiving facilities that bypassed NASA's broadcasting outlets picked up the following exchange:
"NASA: WHAT'S THERE? MISSION CONTROL CALLING APOLLO 11..."
"APOLLO: THESE "BABIES" ARE HUGE, SIR! ENORMOUS! OH MY GOD! YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE IT! I'M TELLING YOU THERE ARE OTHER SPACECRAFT OUT THERE, LINED UP ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE CRATER EDGE! THEY'RE ON THE MOON WATCHING US!"

In 1979, Maurice Chatelain, former chief of NASA Communications Systems confirmed that Armstrong had indeed reported seeing two UFOs on the rim of a crater. "The encounter was common knowledge in NASA, but nobody has talked about it until now."
Soviet scientists were allegedly the first to confirm the incident.
"According to our information, the encounter was reported immediately after the landing of the module," said Dr. Vladimir Azhazha, a physicist and Professor of Mathematics at Moscow University. Neil Armstrong relayed the message to Mission Control that two large, mysterious objects were watching them after having landed near the moon module. But his message was never heard by the public-because NASA censored it."
According to another Soviet scientist, Dr. Aleksandr Kazantsev, Buzz Aldrin took color movie film of the UFOs from inside the module, and continued filming them after he and Armstrong went outside. Dr. Azhazha claims that the UFOs departed minutes after the astronauts came out on to the lunar surface. Maurice Chatelain also confirmed that Apollo 11's radio transmissions were interrupted on several occasions in order to hide the news from the public (this can actually be confirmed because recordings exist in the public domain of these radio 'blackouts'). He went on to claim that "all Apollo and Gemini flights were followed, both at a distance and sometimes also quite closely, by space vehicles of extraterrestrial origin-flying saucers, or UFOs, if you want to call them by that name. Every time it occurred, the astronauts informed Mission Control, who then ordered absolute silence."
So....was it confirmed? Yes, if you believe Binder, Chatelain, Azhazha and Kazantsev. But is there any PROOF in the form of recordings? Sadly, no. NASA even managed to "LOSE" most of the Apollo 11 mission tapes never to be recovered. I do find it very interesting that Armstrong initially refused to participate in any of NASA's 40th celebration ceremonies. He's certainly a man of integrity, and perhaps that's why he refused to be put into situations where he might be forced to lie about UFO's and a possible alien presence on moon? At a conference presented to new NASA apprentices which was aired on CSPAN, Armstrong first compared himself and the other astronauts to a parrot before claiming that parrots don't fly too well (but they do repeat what they are told). Armstrong then went on to state that" 'there are great freedoms available to those who could strip away one of truth's protective layers.'" Was this a reference to the disinformation surrounding the UFO topic? Either way, it's a fascinating story that"--if true--"will probably never be disclosed to the public.

UFO SIGHTING IN MARYLAND ON AUGUST 5TH 2013 - HELICOPTER CHASING OBJECT
1. I was in my backyard taking the trash out. 2. I heard a helicopter that sounded very loud and was traveling fast. 3. It looked like a small object speeding away from the helicopter in the same path. 4. It first appeared as the helicopter was about half way past my full line of sight. It looked like it was traveling at a steady speed for less than a second and then sped off very fast and left a trail behind it and then dissapeared. 5. I was scared because and I'm still bothered by this event because I know it couldn't have been a meteor. I really want to know what it was and want to find out if anyone else is reporting this or have seen it. I know I can't be the only person's attention that the low flying helicopter grabbed. 6. It left a trail and then dissapeared. I lost sight of the helicopter because of the tree tops about 2 seconds after the object dissapeard.

To date UFOs have remained a mystery. Their appearance usually occurs unexpected and is always unpredictable. Probably this is why they have been hidden from academic sight for so long.
UFOs are a fantastic phenomenon with a broad range of interpretation. It can raise inconvenient questions - it may even appear as a threat to scientific certainty itself. For most observers, it will ultimately stay a rather unreal reality.
Are UFOs more than a cultural neomyth? Is it nothing but hard to explain yet natural phenomena - or is it a portent of extraterrestrial civilizations after all?

For years, many scientists had thought that plate tectonics existed nowhere in our solar system but on Earth. Now, a UCLA scientist has discovered that the geological phenomenon, which involves the movement of huge crustal plates beneath a planet's surface, also exists on Mars.
"Mars is at a primitive stage of plate tectonics. It gives us a glimpse of how the early Earth may have looked and may help us understand how plate tectonics began on Earth," said An Yin, a UCLA professor of Earth and space sciences and the sole author of the new research.
Yin made the discovery during his analysis of satellite images from THEMIS (Thermal Emission Imaging System), an instrument on board the Mars Odyssey spacecraft, and from the HIRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. He analyzed about 100 satellite images - approximately a dozen were revealing of plate tectonics.
Yin's research is featured as the cover story in the August issue of the journal "LITHOSPHERE".

My friends and I were in our complex hot tub on Saturday night September 7th 2012, close to 10 PM having a party. We were talking and having a great time, when suddenly we noticed a very bright light to the North of us over an adjacent condo complex. It had two large round green lights, and two red lights of equal size on the bottom, which did not flash and were much too large to be from a traditional aircraft. It rose up from behind the adjacent building and came towards us. It then hovered silently for a few moments, rotated or spun in place and then moved off towards the North East where it could no longer be viewed behind the building. All six of us that witnessed it felt that there was no doubt in our minds that we were seeing something extraordinary and were completely dumbfounded by the incident.

The earliest depictions of ancient aliens and UFOs are those carved on a mountain in Hunan, China. They are said to be dated 47,000 years old, which puts them in the time span of the Neanderthal man, predating Homo-sapiens. These paintings seem to suggest early encounters with unknown beings and, perhaps, visitations from extraterrestrials. The further back you go in time, the harder these art pieces become to interpret. Extraterrestrial depictions in paintings are an incredibly controversial topic among scientists and ancient alien theorists. The scientific community is overwhelmingly skeptical about the subject, but their theories are often no less far fetched and are often backed up by evidence that is just as anecdotal. Despite scientific skepticism, the annals of art history contain many curious examples of mysterious objects being sighted in the sky. Are these ancient artifacts trying to tell us something? What do these paintings tell us about the origins of humanity? And do they suggest a massive missing link in the history of the human story? The ancient alien theory, sometimes known as the study of 'ancient astronauts', has been written on by a variety of fringe thinkers, including David Icke, Zecharia Sitchen, and Erich Von Daniken. They believe extraterrestrials visited the Earth thousands of years ago, sharing their expertise with early civilizations and forever changing the course of human history. They believe this for two primary reasons: "the first is ancient religious texts in which humans witness and interact with gods or other heavenly beings who descend from the sky-sometimes in vehicles resembling spaceships-and possess spectacular powers. The second is physical specimens such as artwork depicting alien-like figures and ancient architectural marvels like Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt." The Pyramid of the Sun at Mexico's Teotihuacan for instance, lies at the center of complex pyramids, each aligned with the planets and stars. SEPTEMBER 16, 2013 - UNITED STATES - Nearly half the population believes UFOs could be a sign of extraterrestrial visitation.
A HuffPost/YouGov poll reveals that 48 percent of adults in the United States are open to the idea that alien spacecraft are observing our planet -- and just 35 percent outright reject the idea.
The poll was seen as vindication from the community of UFO researchers who often feel they are laughed off by government officials.
"It's always been intriguing to me how we act as though only kooks and quacks and little old ladies in tennis shoes believe in flying saucers. And it's never been true, at least for 30 or 40 years," said former nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman, who was the original civilian investigator of the events surrounding the legendary Roswell, NM, UFO crash of 1947.
Friedman is very outspoken on the idea that some UFOs are intelligently controlled extraterrestrial vehicles.
"The believers are far more quiet, but far more on the side of reality," Friedman told The Huffington Post. "When you look at the polls, it's clear. And I see the benefit of that, personally, because I've only had 11 hecklers in over 700 lectures. I've been out there, all over the place, in every state, 18 other countries, and I know that my audience is more than tolerant -- they're accepting. It's been one of the things that really has kept me going."
In the HuffPost/YouGov poll, conducted between Sept. 6-7, 1,000 adults were asked if they either believed or didn't believe that some people have witnessed UFOs that have an extraterrestrial origin.
When YouGov offered respondents the choice between "slightly disagree, disagree" and "strongly disagree," those numbers added up to 35 percent who are skeptical of the notion that any UFOs may be alien-related.
However, nearly half of the adults surveyed (48 percent) resounded in the affirmative, leaving 16 percent who indicated that they weren't sure on either side of the ET issue.
That 48 percent may seem like a much higher number from a HuffPost/YouGov poll earlier this year which showed that a quarter of Americans think alien visitors have come to Earth.
"The thing about that poll is that it had a really high percentage of people saying they weren't sure," said Huffington Post polling director Emily Swanson. "In this new poll, we have a couple of things that maybe pressed some people into having a stronger opinion.
"One of those things is that we gave people a lot of gradations of the ability to agree. We had 'strongly agree' to 'only slightly agree.'"
Swanson further explained how, in the previous poll, "we asked about aliens coming to Earth. In the new poll, we're talking about UFOs of extraterrestrial origin and whether people have seen or experienced those.
There may be a difference in terms of how people are interpreting that.
"Some people might be imagining aliens coming to Earth -- meaning like little green men actually on the ground. Whereas, a UFO, in theory could be an unmanned spacecraft, just some kind of contact with alien technology, and not necessarily actual aliens being on Earth physically. It's very interesting that the people who are on the fence actually seem to be somewhat inclined to say that they do believe."
The breakdown of responses include: -- Those who believe that some UFOs are alien in nature include 49 percent of men and 48 percent of women.
-- College grads in this category show up at 37 percent while 53 percent of those who went to college but didn't graduate are among the UFO-ET believers.
-- From a political perspective, the ET believer camp reveals 58 percent to be Democrats, 47 percent Independents and 37 percent Republicans.Based on these current survey figures, Friedman would like to see fewer UFO eyewitnesses labeled as kooks.
"Polling has one advantage: Nobody knows who you're talking to. It's anonymous, and people are willing to say things if they know it's not going to be attributable to them," he said. - HUFFINGTON POST.

New Mexico is a beautiful state. I spent a couple of days there about three years ago and ever since, have been wanting to go back. I'm much more of a water/ocean/coastal woods type of person, but I can see myself in New Mexico. I think there is something magical, or mystical, indeed about the place. (Which doesn't seem to do a thing for the blatant bigotry I witnessed there. Not everyone is a New Age happy shiny person.)
As many a UFO writer has wondered; are UFOs "attracted" in particular to places like this? Are they a product of such places, or do they come to these places because of the "energy?" Assuming of course they're something other than man made objects.

Acapulco, Mexico Fleet
The UFO footage below is believed to have been filmed in Acapulco, Mexico on the 31 January, 2010. It shows what might be a fleet of up to thirty UFOs travelling above the popular resort city.
So far not much information regarding this UFO capture has come to light and the identity of the witnesses has not been made public. Judging by the audio on the clip the UFOs were seen by a large crowd.

UFO Filmed Live by TV Station in Acre State, Brazil, on February 09, 2009. Video taken by TV Gazeta. Sent to us by Milton Dino Frank Junior.
The film shows one object that changes color in white, red, and blue. You can see clearly the moon and one star in the sky together with this object in the footage.
It was a massive sight, because all neighborhoods saw the object. There were more than 25 witnesses. The object stayed in the sky for more than two hours. It moved from east to south and afterwards from south to west.

Alaska - Two UFO/Plane Encounters
January 30, 1987, a US Air Force KC-135 was flying Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska, to Eielson AFB near Fairbanks.
The crew of the KC-135 reported a large, silent, disc-shaped UFO at about 20,000 feet altitude. At this time, Anchorage radar control showed nothing unusual.
In a moment, radar control asked the pilot of the plane if they still had the unknown object in sight. The frightened pilot replied yes, and added that the UFO was only 40 feet from the plane.

BACK IN 1996, I RECEIVED A NUMBER OF STORIES - SOME FROM RETIRED, BRITISH MILITARY PERSONNEL - SUGGESTING THAT IF I WANTED TO FIND OUT WHAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT "REALLY" KNEW ABOUT UFOS - AND PARTICULARLY SO "CRASHED" UFOS - I WOULD BE WISE TO FOCUS MY ATTENTIONS NOT SO MUCH ON THE WORK OF THE MINISTRY OF DEFENSE, BUT ON THAT OF THE HOME OFFICE. ALTHOUGH THE HOME OFFICE IS CHIEFLY KNOWN FOR ITS WORK IN THE FIELDS OF COUNTER-TERRORISM, IMMIGRATION, AND CRIME POLICY, THERE ARE INDICATIONS THAT ITS WORK DELVES INTO FAR DEEPER, AND MUCH MORE MYSTERIOUS, AREAS, TOO.
According to several of the accounts provided to me back in '96, the Home Office oversaw the security surrounding a number of secret, underground bunkers located across the south and southwest of England. They were built as fortified havens for senior military and government personnel, in the event of a nuclear strike on the UK by the Soviets during the Cold War. I was advised, however, that deep within two of the bunkers were stored the remains of a number of alien bodies - all preserved in cryogenic states.
Of course, there is nothing new about such controversial claims. There are numerous accounts - particularly within the United States - of retired military personnel supposedly having seen extraterrestrial corpses in "secret hangars" or in "classified vaults." And, indeed, many people with an interest in Ufology will know of the rumors surrounding the supposed "Hangar 18' and the tales of dead aliens at Area 51.
What makes the stories about the Home Office and UFOs so interesting and different, however, is the noted "lack" of attention they have received over the years. That's not to say there isn't an intriguing body of data available. Quite the contrary: there actually "is" an intriguing body of data on this matter. According to researcher and author Timothy Good, in his 1987 book, "Above Top Secret":
"A close friend of mine whom I have known since 1952 witnessed the landing of an unidentified flying object in Derbyshire in September 1963, and subsequently came into contact with its operators. Four years afterwards two men with Home Office identification cards turned up at my friend's flat and politely asked a number of questions which clearly indicated that they were familiar with aspects of the incident."
Similarly, in 1982 Good interviewed an eye-opening interview with a retired police inspector, in an attempt to determine if the UFO issue was subject to the constraints of the British Government's Official Secrets Act - a piece of legislation utilized to muzzle government employees when deemed necessary by officialdom. According to Good's source: "What I can say to you, is that I know the subject itself was the subject of a Home Office directive."
Further data that suggested a link between the world of the UFO and that of the Home Office came from the late Graham Birdsall of "UFO Magazine", who informed me that he had spoken with one George Wild - a prison officer at Armley Prison in the English city of Leeds - on a highly controversial matter of a UFO nature.
Wild informed Birdsall that a "senior Home Office prison official" had once let it slip to him that on the first night of the famous series of UFO incidents at Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England in December 1980, high-level orders had arrived at the nearby High Point Prison advising staff to prepare for a possible evacuation of the inmates due to a matter of national security.
I also learned in 1996, from a now-retired UK government official, that the Home Office had extensive guidelines in place in the event that a space satellite decayed from its orbit and crashed on British soil. "You could equally apply those guidelines to a crashed UFO," he said, with a smile of the knowing kind. Acting on this information, in December 1996, I telephoned the Home Office and asked to be put through to their Press Office.
I explained the situation: I was interested to know what the Home Office's response would be if a large, metallic object from space - such as a satellite - crashed to earth on the UK. I considered it wise not to mention UFOs, even though that was my primary area of interest.
I was transferred to a helpful man who informed me that the responsibility for monitoring satellite movements over the British Isles was predominantly the domain of the tracking station at RAF Fylingdales, Yorkshire. If it appears there is a possibility, however remote, that a satellite in a decaying orbit might impact on the UK, Fylingdales had standing orders to keep the Ministry of Defense informed, who in turn were obliged to advise the Home Office of the unfolding situation. As the Press Officer explained to me:
"The Home Office has responsibility for emergency planning, which obviously isn't specific, necessarily, to satellites. But the situation is they only really become a matter for the Home Office when they've landed, because that's when the emergency services come into play."
He continued: "For example, there was one recently - a Chinese satellite which came down. That was one we were kept well informed of and were aware of. We were advised of the expected time it was going to land and all that kind of stuff. We don't really take much actual action; our side would be more the policy angle; ensuring that all the right contingency plans are in place."
My next stop: RAF Fylingdales.
"You want the Space Information Officer," I was advised by the switchboard operator at Fylingdales when I detailed my quest to her. A few moments later the SIO was on the line: "We track satellites all the time. When there are predictions for satellite decays - this is maintained by US and UK authorities - and if there is one which is potentially going to cause problems, the Ministry of Defense and the Home Office are the people who get involved.
"We would just track it and keep those people up to date with what was happening with the satellite at the time. The Home Office and the MoD do all the coordination. Accurate predictions as to where something is going to crash are very difficult: it depends exactly on what the satellite's doing - if it's rolling or if it's got high drag in one part or another. It also depends on what angle it enters the upper end of the atmosphere.
"There are experts that are able to calculate to within an hour or so when it's coming down. We can advise the Home Office and the MoD of the position of the satellite, how it's moving, whether it's speeding up, slowing down, or whether it's changing its attitude, or whatever."
In addition, and also in 1996, I received a newly-declassified Home Office directive of 1979 titled "Home Office Circular No. ES 5/1979, Satellite Accidents". It dealt with Home Office guidelines for dealing with the possible recovery of stricken space vehicles on the British mainland. The document stated:
"It is for the Government to decide whether, and if so by what means, a public warning of danger from radioactivity should be given. In reaching that decision, the need to prevent unnecessary alarm would be carefully considered. Chief Officers should therefore ensure that nothing is done locally to anticipate a Government statement.
"When reports of suspected or actual locations have been received the police should take such steps as may be needed locally to prevent people entering areas which may be dangerous because of radioactive material. Some larger pieces of debris might have radiation fields of significance over distances of the order of 100 meters."
The document then went on to illustrate the many and varied divisions within the British Government that had jurisdiction in the area of fallen spacecraft. As well as the Home Office, this included: the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston; the National Radiological Protection Board; the Ministry of Defense; Chief Officers of Police and Chief Fire Officers in the UK; and representatives of the "NAIR Scheme" - the National Arrangements for Incidents Involving Radioactivity.
Clearly the directive - and the testimony of the staff at the Home Office and at RAF Fylingdales - was relative to the Home Office's involvement in the recovery of crashed space vehicles of terrestrial origin. But what of the Home Office's link with objects of possible "non"-terrestrial origin? I have to admit that, although I have a number of stories on-file concerning alleged Home Office involvement in crashed UFO events in the UK, nothing concrete or definitive has ever surfaced. Nevertheless, where there is smoke there is often a degree of fire, too...
Examiner.com-- A California man reports seeing an oval-shaped UFO and a one to two-foot-tall creature on his property September 30, 2009, according to witness testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) database.
The oval-shaped craft was seen about 3 p.m. after the man reported seeing a reflection of the object off of a camper shell window.
At 9:50 p.m., the man said he went outside to feed his cat and saw "something flashing colorful lights" just off his porch steps that was no bigger than a baseball.
The man took two steps toward the object and realized it was being held by "something" that stood no more than one or two feet tall.
Both the man and the "creature" were startled and moved away from each other.
The witness claims he heard the object hit the ground, but when he went back to the area to look for it, nothing was there.

TITAN'S SURFACE FEATURES (QT FORMAT)
New images of unsurpassed clarity have been obtained with the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) of formations on the surface of Titan, the largest moon in the Saturnian system. They were made by an international research team during recent commissioning observations with the "Simultaneous Differential Imager (SDI)", a novel optical device, just installed at the NACO Adaptive Optics instrument .With the high-contrast SDI camera, it is possible to obtain extremely sharp images in three colours simultaneously. Although mainly conceived for exoplanet imaging, this device is also very useful for observations of objects with thick atmospheres in the solar system like Titan. Peering at the same time through a narrow, unobscured near-infrared spectral window in the dense methane atmosphere and an adjacent non-transparent waveband, images were obtained that are virtually uncontaminated by atmospheric components. They map the reflectivity of a large number of surface features in unprecedented detail.The images show a number of surface regions with very different reflectivity. Of particular interest are several large "dark" areas of uniformly low reflectivity. One possible interpretation is that they represent huge surface reservoirs of liquid hydrocarbons.Whatever the case, these new observations will be most useful for the planning of the delivery of the Huygens probe - now approaching the Saturn system on the NASA/ESA Cassini spacecraft and scheduled for descent to Titan's surface in early 2005.ESO Press Photo eso0412 shows the clearest view of Titan's surface, available so far. It was obtained through a "transparent", narrow spectral window with the 8.2-m VLT YEPUN telescope and the NACO adaptive optics instrument operated in the Simultaneous Differential Imager (SDI) mode . It covers about three-quarters of the full surface and has an image resolution (sharpness) of 0.06 arcsec, corresponding to 360 km on the surface. One degree of longitude on the equator corresponds to 45 km on Titan's surface. The brightness is proportional to the surface reflectivity. The nature of the various regions is still unknown although it is speculated that the darkest areas may indicate the extent of reservoirs of liquid hydrocarbons.CREDIT:

This month 40 years ago, the AP ran a report (following a rash of UFO sightings) that centered on some of the earliest (and possibly first) laws enacted regarding these phenomena.
Palacios, TX mayor Bill Jackson announced the first ever "Fly-In" for UFOs at his city's local airport. A Fly-In is a social gathering for pilots and this invitation extended as far as outer space.
Ocean Springs, MS rejected an ordinance that would have governed the operation of UFOs within the city limits. The details of this proposed ordinance included a speed limit on UFOs (under twice the speed of sound).
The ordinance was penned by City Attorney Oscar Jordan who also proposed to make extraterrestrials subject to local law. In part this law would have stated: "It shall be unlawful for any person or persons to discriminate against such alien beings as may be transported in UFOs because of their race, creed or color, or their national origin, or international origin, or universal origin, or any other origin." Seems like he could have simply said "regardless or origin."
Such 'profiling' may have taken place earlier that month in Falkville, AL when officer Jeff Greenshaw responded to a call about a spaceship with blinking lights.
Greenshaw found no craft when he arrived on scene but did encounter a metallic being of some sort in the middle of the road. What little movements it made were very robotic, Grreenshaw recalled. And no noises or sounds emanated from its featureless face. The officer also recalled that its head culminated in a point. Could the officer have been describing a helmet instead of a head?
Regardless of what he thought he was seeing, Greenshaw got out of his patrol car and said almost comically, "Howdy, stranger". However, the being made no sound and continued to stand there in the road.
Greenshaw took his camera out of the car and began to take photographs of the entity. Still, it made no sound and it didn't move; but when the officer switched on blue strobes atop his vehicle, the creature fled.
Greenshaw leaped into his car and sped after it. Even in a vehicle, the patrol man was unable to catch up to the strange sprinter.
Next door, in Gulfport, MS, a cab driver reported his encounter with an alien being that stopped his vehicle. However, the driver later recanted his tale.
