The "Futura" mission ISS Expedition 42/43, to which the Air Force pilot Captain Samantha Cristoforetti will be taking part - the seventh Italian astronaut up till now, and the first Italian woman that will go to space - was officially unveiled January 22 at Palazzo Chigi in Rome during a crowded press conference. "It is a great joy for me to be here today, and it will be a great honour to be part of this mission to the ISS" Cristoforetti said. "I feel very calm, in my everyday life I live the preparation with commitment but also with joy, knowing that I have the privilege of being part of an extraordinary group that has extraordinary opportunities". She will board a Soyuz TMA-15M spacecraft at the end of November, and will fly to the ISS from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
Cristoforetti was selected as an ESA astronaut in May 2009. She joined ESA in September 2009 and completed basic astronaut training in November 2010. She was assigned to this year's mission in July 2012.
The logo of the mission was officially unveiled during the press conference as the winner of the 'contest' organized by Italian Space Agency (ASI) "Disegna la Missione di Samantha Cristoforetti" ["Draw the Mission of Samantha Cristoforetti"]. It represents - as seen to the left - a 'stylized' ISS and its imaginary orbit around the Earth, with a rising sun and a canopy of stars in the background. This was created by Valerio Papeti, a young graduated in the Academy of Fine Arts in Turin.

The logo has been chosen from competition entries asking for a design that captured the elements of her mission: research, discovery, science, technology, exploration, wonder, adventure, travel, excellence, teamwork, humanity, enthusiasm, dreams and nutrition.
"I derive a strong sense of purpose from being part of the space community, as we build a future in space for we human beings. The name Futura for me is about our collective journey towards that future." Cristoforetti said. "The logo beautifully represents that momentum, that voyage of discovery. As a European of Italian nationality, I am especially proud of Europe's and Italy's contribution to this endeavour and I am happy to see Europe's outline and the Italian colours in the design."
Cristoforetti is now training for her mission on Station systems, the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, robotics and spacewalks. During the six months she stays on the space laboratory she will run new international experiments and continue the research of her astronaut colleagues.

The ASI, the only national space agency in Europe to have direct access to the resources of the ISS, has selected and is developing eight Italian scientific research and technological demonstration projects for the "Futura" mission, which will be carried out by our astronaut in her six months aboard the ISS: five projects will be devoted to the study of various aspects of human physiology under conditions of weightlessness, two will perform biological analysis on cell samples taken in microgravity; a demonstrator will be experimented on board the ISS for an automated manufacturing process for the realization of 3D objects in zero gravity (3D printing). The projects have been developed by universities, research centres, companies and Italian SMEs, and selected by the ASI with the National Human Spaceflight Call for Proposals for the utilization of the ISS.

This is an area that I have ponder for some time and was briefly discussed on the Realityuncovered Forum site a few months ago. I briefly floated one of the theories during the recent debates on Billy Cox's DeVoid Blog site, admittedly drawing little interests. Yet, I believe that there is something to gain by looking closely at two potentially competing theories concerning possible UFO activity over the Echo Flight area back in March of 1967.
Let's look at the current popular theory, or at least how I see it. I'll list the pros's and con's, information that supports or does not support each proposed theory.
THEORY #1: "Ten ICBMs in the Echo Flight area dropped off alert due to a single UFO sighted over a single Launch Facility."
Pros:
1) Ear witness (Walter Figel receiving a verbal report from one of the LFs)
2) Possible eyewitnesses (individuals that contacted Figel)
3) Documented evidence that ten ICBMs dropped off alert.
4) Unknown source of EMP noise pulse. (Point of origination questionable?)
5) Positive rumors of UFOs
Cons:
1) Official A.F. investigation and its conclusion of noise pulse causing logic coupler failure.
2) No eye witness, as of yet, have been identified or have come forward.
3) Command and control design and physical layout of the flight area. All Launch Facility (LF) were completely electrically isolated from one another.
4) Implementation of Boeing Engineering Change Proposal for EMP shielding.
Theory #1's major supportive facts are probably that of Walter Figel hearing of a UFO report concerning one of the LFs as well as the corresponding ten missile shutdowns. The major facts detracting from this theory is the lack of eye witnesses and the design of the command and control system peculiar to Minuteman, that is, the total electrical isolation of all LFs from one another.
The electrical isolation design of a flight's ten LFs greatly hampers this theory because of the difficulties that one UFO would have affecting all ten LFs by hovering over a single LF. By design, all LF harden command and control cables ran only to the Launch Control Center (LCC) for command and control purposes. There were no cables running between one LF to another. This was a deliberate design in case of a nuclear detonation over a single LF would not affect the remaining LFs. This was also true of any accidental or sabotage cutting of a single LF cable system.
Lastly, and just as equally important, was the Boeing Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) and it's subsequent implementation that provided additional EMP shielding to all of SAC's Minuteman wings as a direct response to the aftermath of the Echo shutdown. It should be noted that after this fix was put in place, there were no other full flight shutdowns in any missile wing, including Malmstrom.
Theory #2: "Ten ICBMs in the Echo Flight area dropped off alert due to UFOs over each of the flight's ten Launch Facilities."
Pros:
1) UFO override of the command and control system allowing access to each LF in the flight was possible. This could have by-passed the LCC's Weapon System Controller.
2) LF electrical isolation is negated.
3) Ten EMP noise pulses could have been sent to each of the ten LFs at roughly the same time.
4) There would have been no effects noted at the LCF/LCC other than what was presented on the crew commander's status console.
5) Documented rumors of UFO activity in the flight area.
Cons:
1) No eye witnesses, either civilian or military confirmed multiple UFOs in the flight and surrounding area.
2) No documented effects on the commercial power grid supplying electricity to the flight and surrounding area. This would have been expected with EMPs directed at all ten LFs.
3) No documented evidence that the Outer Zone/Inner Zone security system was triggered at any of the unmanned LFs.
The strength of Theory #2 is the by-passing of the command and control system of the LCC and the capability to totally negate the LF electrical isolation design. Where this hypothesis suffers are the lack of eye witnesses to multi-UFO sightings (civilian and military) and no documentation of power outages/fluctuations effecting the commercial power grid for that portion of eastern Montana.
As a side, the issue of the OZ/IZ security system at the unmanned LFs is an interesting question. Would EMP-like pulses have effected the microwave security net installed at each of the ten LFs?
THEORY #3: "Ten ICBMs in the Echo Flight area dropped off alert due to one UFO hovering over or near the LCF/LCC."
Pros:
1) Direct effect on the LCCs command, control, and communications to all squadron LFs
2) This negates the electrical isolation effect of the LFs
Cons:
1) No documented report or rumor that a UFO had been over or near Echo's LCF/LCC.
2) No eye witnesses.
This theory is the most plausible based on technical and engineering feasibility. The major strength is the ability to affect the LCCs Weapons System Controller and send out signals to each individual LF. This also tracks with the Air Force's investigation of the noise-pulse possibly originating from the LCC. The major facts that hurts this theory is the lack of any documentation or eye witnesses that a UFO was near or over Echo-01.
CONCLUSION:
Since theory #3 is the most feasible theory from an engineering standpoint, based on the then Minuteman I command and control system in place, then what does this mean for the other two remaining theories? The current and popular theory #1 looks good and has numerous supportive areas, but it fails dramatically based upon the lack of corroborating eye witnesses and the LF electrical isolation design. Theory #2 is feasible, but also dramatically falls short due to the lack of eye witness corroborating multi-UFO sightings over each of the ten LFs. Theory #3, an excellent possibility (my opinion), also fails dramatically due to the lack of supportive documentation and eye witness accounting of any sighting of a UFO over or near Echo's LCF/LCC. THEREFORE, I CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THAT SINCE NONE OF THE THREE THEORIES ARE POSSIBLE THEN NO UFO WAS THE CAUSE OF ECHO'S TEN ICBMS TO UNEXPECTEDLY SHUTDOWN.

In January, the venerable Royal Society celebrated 350 years of exploring the natural world by convening for the theme "The Detection Of Extraterrestrial Life And The Consequences For Science And Society." The media loved this stuff, coming as it did from arguably the world's premier forum for mainstream science. Reax ranged from Far Out to Visionary, even though UFOs were conspicuously excluded from the conversation.
But conventional wisdom ain't always what it's cracked up to be, as a Royal Society president proved in 1986. Lord William Thomson Kelvin may have attained immortality for developing the foundation of Absolute Zero, but he blundered big time when he veered into aeronautics. "I have not the smallest molecule of faith," he said just seven years before the Wright Brothers changed the world at Kitty Hawk, "in aerial navigation other than ballooning or of expectation of good results from any of the trials we hear of."
There's a long and perversely satisfying litany of such gaffes in Science Was Wrong: Startling Truths About Cures, Theories and Inventions 'They' Declared Impossible. Assembled by veteran UFO researcher Stan Friedman and Kathleen Marden, niece of celebrated UFO abductee Betty Hill and co-author of Friedman's book Captured!, the agenda here is predictable enough. But often fun, especially when the pompous certitude of authority figures makes them look like idiots. E.g.:
"Television won't matter in your lifetime or mine," Radio Times editor Rex Lambert, 1936; "There is practically no chance communications space satellites will be used to provide better telephone, telegraph, television, or radio service inside the United States," T. Craven, FCC commissioner, 1961; "To affirm that the aeroplane is going to revolutionize naval warfare of the future is to be guilty of the wildest exaggeration," Scientific American, 1916.
Science Was Wrong also revisits the struggles of true innovators to persuade the mainstream to accept reality. From Edward Jenner's campaign for vaccination as an effective tool against smallpox to the ridicule provoked by Ignaz Philipp Semmeweis's arguments that infections could be reduced if physicians would just wash their hands between patients, the authors address the consequences in store for those who challenge the status quo.
Not surprisingly, Science Was Wrong strays into UFOs, much of which was covered in Friedman's 2008 book Flying Saucers and Science. It also takes a curious shot at global warming. While the book accurately describes the numerous holes in the CO2 data and its impact upon climate change, the Man v. Nature debate on the origin of this controversy is far from settled. Raising this issue in the same pages with quack-science eugenics - in which the crimes committed against humanity were intentional and unambiguous - seems beyond premature. It damages its own credibility.
Still, Science Was Wrong can be a decent reference for those who mistake institutional science for honest inquiry. Fortunately - or maybe, unfortunately - there aren't as many of those subscribers around as there used to be.

I live in Lincoln, CA and since 2007 I have experienced three very distinct triangle sightings.
Both the night sightings occurred over the same large field near the intersection of Ferrari Ranch Rd and Joiner Parkway. The first sighting occurred in the summer of 2007 and the second in near Christmas of 2008. I never reported them before.
There is little light contamination and the field that I am talking of is pitch-black at night. So I know what I saw was real. No sound, just three white lights and one red blinking light.
Because I live near the Lincoln Airport, and because I grew up living in a house across the street from Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose, CA I can distinguish with 100% certainty what a small airplane sounds like. The object I have seen twice at night made no sound whatsoever. And the small aircraft that do fly nearby really do make lots of noise.
Last Thursday on May 6th 2010 both my two sons and I witnessed a low flying unidentifiable craft in the shape of a triangle in broad daylight at 6:45 PM. This occurred at the intersection of Ferrari Ranch Rd and Joiner Parkway.
The craft had three small but very bright white lights (no red and no green navigational lighting) were visible, and the craft was nearly the same color as the sky, a muted white and grey color.
The shape was odd. At first I though it was a helicopter, I told my sons to look at the helicopter as I was driving. But my kids both said, "Dad that's not a helicopter."
I slowed down to look; it was not like any conventional air craft that I know of. It had three points, with the end of each wing tip pointed upward; all wings were equal in length and in shape. There was no propeller visible.
I slowed down, looked and we all agreed it was an odd looking triangular shaped air craft. It flew (almost hovering) very slowly and was only about 500 feet above us. We could clearly see the craft. I searched for numbers, colors, etc. but it had no markings. And what was strange is that it had no windows or anything that appeared to resemble a cockpit. The craft had a half domed shaped middle section, and was slightly elongated. The dome area was flat on the bottom.
As we watched, the craft flew straight in our direction before banking to its right exposing the three equally sized and shaped wings and flat bottom. It flew off at higher rate of speed towards a northwestwardly direction. Then, as we drove away it disappeared from our view.
My sons are 12 and 10 years old, and they both know planes, as do I. And this was not a plane. I have been online since then to try finding experimental kit-type planes to debunk what we saw, but I simply cannot.
I have searched Google looking through thousands of possible planes that could match what we seen. And since the Lincoln Airport is nearby, I have called them and asked if any unusual looking planes were flown on that day, they said "no". And nothing I can find online matches what I saw.
This is not a hoax and I am 100% for certain about what I have seen. I feared that people would say I was crazy so I kept my past two sightings to myself except for with my wife and kids. But now that my own two boys have witnessed what I have seen, I am deciding to come forth and share what I know.
I would be willing to take a polygraph to prove I am stating the truth.
