Full Description of event/sighting: I was walking home from Market Mall in Calgary, AB Canada around 7:15pm on Oct 19th. It was starting to get dark out and I and noticed what looked like to be a falling star.
It kind of had a crackling sound as it bounced across the sky. I just expected it to just burn out but to my surprise I saw it do a very quick controlled figure eight pattern in the sky! I just stood there totally stunned at what I was seeing! It stopped mid air after the very fast figure eight formation and started blinking one single bright light. There was nothing that could have maneuvered the way this light did!
I couldn't see any shape which I thought was strange because you can always tell if its a plane or helicopter even if is really high up in the sky. The light kept blinking one single bright light. I watched it move slowly southward over the hill top and out of view.
I found it interesting reading other posts on Oct 19th that there were other sightings that same night. Is this fairly normal?

Just to add to my description of my sighting as you suggested.
There was no type of trail or tail following behind it.
If I had to make a rough guess as to the altitude of this thing it was actually the height a helicopter would fly around the city.
I couldn't see any outline of an object which was very weird because I could see the outline of planes way up in the sky that same night.. The blinking light was very similar to a what you would see on an aircraft light but much more intense and a larger light.
I was able to observe the blinking, single white light for around 5 minutes total. The actual shooting star effect and the maneuver only took around 10 seconds. Then after stopping mid air and turning on its light.. it moved slowly southward, slower than a helicopter would travel. It stayed at the same distance from the ground as it moved and was completely silent.
The weather conditions were around 15C and the sky was somewhat cloudy.
I thought it may have been trying to not bring attention to itself by coming close to the ground as a shooting star and then taking on the light of an aircraft as it flew through town. Very creepy! What are they up to anyways? especially at night.
Wish I could verify with someone who may be monitoring the sky that night such as air traffic control at the airport! Someone else must have noticed something odd in the sky that night.

If the craft don't do anything weird, the skeptics say they (with some justification) that the UFO were unknown terrestrial. If the UFO do exceed conventional capabilities, the skeptics would say they are "tricks of the mind, dreams, and tales".
Nice defense mechanism you've got there. fwiw, I agree that as long as it's just weird lights in the sky the whole UFO thing isn't worth the investment of much time or effort.
But the proof, should one be interested, is in the evidence, such as it is. Such cases as RB-47 are interesting advances in the science of UFOlogy. There's no cut&dried answer yet, but only mental midgets require that degree of evidential clarity before taking the issue seriously.
In the Illinois case, Officer Barton said he saw the object scoot (from a slow cruise) ~8mi across the sky rather quickly. He could be lying, or was drunk, or whatever. But the officer in the next town says he saw a similar object to what Barton saw.

"With ratings so slumped as to make a slouching teenager appear upright, The History Channel's UFO Hunters" may be facing the Ax Men.
In an op-ed piece on newsblaze, Robert Paul Reyes questions why the show belongs in the History Channel lineup alongside other, more relevant programs such as "Cities of the Underworld" and "Digging for the Truth". But The History Channel has often strayed from the theme of historic documentary with series like "Monster Quest", "Ax Men", "Expedition Africa", "Ice Road Truckers", and "Life After People".
What do any of these shows have to do with History? Why does SciFi air "Ghost Hunters" - or better yet, wrestling? Why does Discovery air "Cash Cab" (even though I love that show)? Why is TLC (The Learning Channel) turning into nothing but a vehicle for exploiting different people like a turn-of-the-century Freak Show?
If anything, of all these shows on the History Channel, "UFO Hunters" and "Monster Quest" are the only ones that DO deal with history, by examining historic UFO cases and monster sightings.
I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan of either show. I find them both sensational, biased, and unsatisfying. Despite the introduction of Kevin Cook to "UFO Hunters" (the only one with a head on his shoulders), I am still annoyed by Bill Birnes' believe-at-any-cost approach. He is not out to investigate UFO sightings, he's out to PROVE that UFO's are extraterrestrial space craft. And don't get me started on his annoying habit of restating what someone has just said as if it were his own thought. Doesn't he realize this makes him look insipidly unoriginal? And the less said about Pat Uskert, the better.
But I've also been intrigued by both these shows at times. And I think that's the rub: I hate it because I know it can be so much better. The same with "Monster Quest". I would like to think that those who watch the History Channel are a fairly intelligent breed. So, why are the shows getting more and more dumbed down to cater to the Joe The Plumber crowd? "Look, Billy-Bob! There's a marathong about the show that pits UFO-abducted sharks against monster trucks and then uses 3D graphics to see who would win in a fight against the DaVinci code!"
So, while I agree the show should have a better network (SciFi would be good, but I've always thought a new paranormal-themed channel would be great), I don't think it is yet time to chuck the baby out with the bath water. It's time that its fans demand more from the show. Better science, better history, better investigation.
