DOANE PROF UNEARTHS `COSMIC WATERGATE' IN SEARCH FOR UFO DATA.

Crete, Ne. - A lecture on the possibiltiy of life on Mars changed the
life of Jim Falvo, assistant professor of communications at Doane
College.

After attending a lecture six years ago in which Omahan Harry Jordan
discussed unusual surface features on Mars, Falvo became curious not
only about possible life and artifacts on Mars, but also the secrecy
that seemed to cloak the issue.

A former journalist, Falvo was intrigued by the security measures at
the lecture and by charges that the U.S. government was withholding
information from the public.

He says he felt the implications of the story were enormous, and could
not understand why there wasn't more coverage by the mainstream media.
If the claims were true, it was the "discovery of the millenium."

That same year, Falvo moved to Minnesota to teach at St. Olaf College.
Spurred by what he called "a normal curiosity," he started travelling
in his spare time, first collecting data about Mars, then about UFOs.

He returned to Nebraska in 1990 to teach at Doane. In the past six
years, he said, he has spent "thousands of hours and thousands of
dollars" gathering data on UFOs and other unexplained phenomena.

Without actually going to Mars, Falvo believes no one can verify
whether life exists there. He refers to a possible government coverup
as a "Cosmic Watergate."

Falvo has taken it upon himself to collect and scrutinize whatever
information he can find, then make it available to others.

"I feel a social responsibility to get the word out," he said.

Much of that information, stacked in his office at Doane, provided
the basis for two sessions he taught there.

Falvo said his students - even those who were skeptics - left class
more open-minded about the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

Falvo has no personal experience with UFOs or unexplained phenomena,
and he hopes he never does.

"I have no desire to have an encounter. Some of this stuff is
frightening," he said.

In his research, Flavo attempts to disprove accounts by finding holes
in them.

"I'm hoping that somebody comes up to me and says, `This is a pile of
garbage, and here's why.' But no one's done that," he said. "It's
refreshing that it's getting the exposure it deserves. It's a
legitimate area of scientific inquiry."

Falvo has videotaped people who claim to have had personal encounters
with UFOs or unexplained phenomena, including three Doane students
who, on seperate occasions, said they sighted UFOs while driving
between Lincoln and Crete. Sightings of lights above Lincoln in late
January also aroused Falvo's interest. He said the descriptions of
what was seen by Lincoln police officers and others have similarities
to what people have described in other incidents.

Falvo urges those interested in learning more about unexplained
phenomena to approach the subject with some skepticism and to avoid
the fringe issues, such as abductions and arranged contacts with
aliens.

There are many concrete case studies available, he said, and research
can be done at public libraries as well. Workshops and conferences
provide an opportunity to meet with experts in the field.

"Exploring the UFO Mystery" a conference exploring unexplained
phenomena, is scheduled April 22-24 at the Nebraska Center for
Continuing Education, 33rd and Holdrege streets.

Yet another previously known but undigitised UAP file, has now been digitised. It is file series J63, control symbol 5/40/Air Part 1, titled "Reports on UFOs." It originated with RAAF Base Townsville. It is a 227 page file, with a date range of 1957-1970, and contains numerous low interest lights in the sky type of report, but in places it has items of great interest to the researcher, such as:

1. A report by a RAAF pilot,,who's aircraft was sent to Millaa-Millaa in Queensland following reports of a UAP on 5 June 1961.

2. A report of a UAP by Detective Constable 1st Class Meskell, and others on 3 June 1965 in the Bowen/Proserpine area. (Click here for a previous post on Meskell's involvement in the Bougainville Reef case of May 1965.)

3. Observations of a UAP on 24 June 1965 from Daunia Station, near Nebo.

4. Numerous documents relating to the classic 19 January 1966 physical trace case near Tully. These papers include press clippings; internal RAAF minutes; local police papers, and a proforma completed by the witness himself, George Pedley. (Click here for a sample of the Internet based accounts of the event, but then take an opportunity to read the witness' own report form completed at the time.) It is worth noting the short duration of the event, as I had always thought it was of several minutes duration; it was not.

They had rain forests. You don't hear about this. They had ancient rain forests; they had jungles; they had so much oil and gas; they had reserves out the wazoo.

Nick Pope, who has more than two decades under his belt at the Ministry of Defence, said mass summer events - like the Olympic Games in London - would be a prime time for crafts from otherworlds to present themselves to mankind.

He warned: 'With the summer of mass events we are all on high alert for terrorism. But we must also cast our eyes further afield and be prepared for even the most seemingly unfathomable.'

Pope's duties at the MoD included investigating reports of UFOs between 1991 and 1994, and says he began his research as a sceptic, before becoming convinced that the sightings raised important defence for national security and air safety issues.

He was particularly interested in cases where the witnesses were pilots, or where UFOs were tracked on radar, and said there were other believers among his former colleagues.

He said: 'It has been a widely held belief in Ministry of Defence circles that "aliens" have been able to detect us for decades via TV and radio broadcasts.

'What once seemed like science fiction is steadily being realised by central governing bodies as distinctly real.

'If aliens have studied our psychology, they may choose to appear in our skies on a significant date - the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games is one date being widely circulated by conspiracy groups.

'The atomic bombs detonated in the 1940s, and the rocket technology since developed would unquestionably have alerted nearby alien civilisations to our existence.

'On their arrival it is difficult to say what they would do: explore, help or destroy. Our resources make us quite a special threat.'

'If UFOs came into our atmosphere, RAF jets such as the Eurofighter Typhoons, and missiles such as the Rapiers guarding the Olympic Games would be well equipped to enter the fray.

'And if the aliens landed, in an unprecedented move, I am in doubt that the entire Army would be join the fight.

'The TA and the Reserves would be called out and conscription potentially introduced. '

Speaking about the cultural impact of aliens since the first widely-reported cases in the 1940s, he said: 'It is interesting to note that we are all in some ways equipped to deal with alien invasion - games such as Resistance: Burning Skies on PlayStation Vita help acclimatise people to the reality of extraterrestrial life - and in particular that they might be hostile.

'It is a widely held belief that classified information about weapons and tactics useful in combatting alien occupation are embedded into such gameplay.

'The primary flaw is our lack of knowledge - we are limited in the extent of what we know about the alien species.'

Pope's role in the government was once described as 'working on the the X-Files of the UK', and he has since published Sunday Times top ten non-fiction bestsellers, such as Open Skies, Closed Minds.

His final role at the MoD, held until 2006, was Directorate of Defence Security, and since leaving he has given lectures and TV interviews about his views on the existence of UFOs.

'We saw this type of treachery and cowardice in the Second World War. Though some brave people joined the Resistance, much of France accepted Nazi occupation.

It's funny and zany, has fantastic illustrations and includes a character called Major Fluffy. He's the leader of the aliens, and is a teeny tiny talking hamster. I want him and I want him NOW!

"Spaceheadz" chronicles Michael K's first day at his new school, and his chance meeting with aliens Bob and Jennifer. Their mission is to turn over 3 million kids into Spaceheadz and save the world from being turned off. It's a bit job to take on, which is why they need Michael K's help. He knows what all the world's odd groceries are, and he can explain the human way of life to the aliens. He's quite handy to have around really, and is also Bob and Jennifer's first successful Spaceheadz!

As well as hamster fun and alien invasions, "Spaceheadz" is also full of scientific facts, ranging from gravity and physics to single root systems. I'm 25 and even I learnt some new things, then I went straight online and registered on the interactive website mentioned inside. I'm now a Spaceheadz, and I have to say I'm rather proud of that.
