The 18-month-old toddler has improved to a critical but stable condition after she was trapped in a vehicle that plunged into a Utah river, according to police.
Authorities said that the girl's mother - who was the driver of the vehicle and was identified as 25-year-old Lynn Jennifer Groesbeck - was killed in the accident, which took place about 10.30pm local time on Friday. Ms Groesbeck had been visiting her parents in Salem and was driving to her home in nearby Springville, a suburb of Provo, Utah.
Authorities think Lily Groesbeck, who was strapped into her car seat throughout the ordeal, was able to survive temperatures below freezing because of the way the vehicle landed in the Spanish Fork River.
"It's miraculous that the child was able to survive," Spanish Fork Police Lieutenant Matt Johnson said. "EMS stated that due to the way the car flipped into the river, the rear portion of the vehicle was far enough out of the water that the child was able to remain dry."
Johnson said that water also was able to flow through the vehicle instead of sweeping it away.
When a fisherman discovered the vehicle about 12.30pm local time on Saturday, the car was resting upside down in the water, police said. Authorities responding to a report of an abandoned vehicle were shocked to discover the toddler strapped into her car seat.
The water was so cold that seven emergency responders were treated for hypothermia after they entered the water to perform the rescue, according to local news station KSTU.
Ms Groesbeck's sister, Jill Sanderson, told KSTU that her niece is doing well, considering what she endured.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the vehicle to strike a concrete barrier before plunging five to seven metres off the roadway and into the river below, police said.

PIT BULL KILLS GOOD SAMARITAN TRYING TO HELP OWNER
A pit bull attacked and killed a man who was trying to help the dog's ill owner in a home in East Wheeling, W.Va., authorities said.
Wheeling police said Roy Higgenbotham Jr., 62, of Wheeling, was attacked by the pit bull shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday in a home in the 100 block of 14th Street.
The dog's owner, David Wallace, 63, also of Wheeling, was also found dead in the house, according to police.
Lt. Phil Redford said police believe Mr. Wallace suffered a heart attack and that Mr. Higgenbotham was attacked by the dog as he tried to resuscitate the owner.
"This wasn't a vicious, unprovoked attack from this dog," Wheeling police Sgt. Gregg McKenzie said. "It was probably defending its owner."
An official cause of death will be determined once autopsies are completed.
Police and other emergency responders were called to the home regarding a dog attack and had to force their way into the residence, where they found both victims.
Mr. Higgenbotham was badly injured and Mr. Wallace was unconscious. Both were taken to local hospitals, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
Ohio County animal control officers removed the pit bull from the home and it has been quarantined.
Because the owner of the dog is dead, it will likely be euthanized unless a family member comes forward to claim it, said Tom Oberdick, Ohio County assistant dog warden. A judge will make the final decision on euthanization, he said.
Mr. Oberdick said the pit bull cannot be put up for adoption.

Dr. Jesse Marcel Jr., who claimed he handled debris from the 1947 crash of an alien spacecraft near Roswell, New Mexico, has died at the age of 76 doing what he loved best - reading a book about UFOs.
Denice Marcel said her father was found dead at his home in Helena Saturday, less than two months after making his last trip to Roswell.
Over the past 35 years, Marcel Jr. appeared on TV shows, documentaries and radio shows; was interviewed for magazine articles and books, and traveled the world lecturing about his experiences in Roswell.

'They were told to keep it quiet and they did for years and years and years,' Linda Marcel said.
Interest in the case was revived, however, when physicist and UFO researcher Stanton Friedman spoke with Jesse Marcel Sr. in the late 1970s.
Friedman wrote the foreword to Marcel Jr.'s 2007 book The Roswell Legacy, and described him as a courageous man who 'set a standard for honesty and decency and telling the truth.'
'His legacy is that he had the courage to speak out when he didn't have to about handling wreckage that his Dad brought home,' Friedman said Tuesday. 'He worked with artists to come up with what the symbols on the wreckage looked like. He didn't have to do that. He could have kept his mouth shut. A lot of people did.'
On his last trip to Roswell in early July, UFO researcher and Earth science professor Frank Kimbler arranged for Marcel to visit his childhood home and the debris site.
'I remember my dad did say that he loved the ride up to the site that day because he was able to discuss science with Frank,' Denice Marcel said in an email to The Associated Press. 'One thing about my Dad, he was always reading something on astronomy or some kind of scientific journal. He loved astronomy with a passion.'
ROSWELL: CONSPIRACY THEORY CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
Roswell, New Mexico sprang to international fame on July 8, 1947, when the local newspaper reported the capture of a 'flying saucer' by government officials in the town.
Over the decades since the discovery, conspiracy theorists have insisted that the debris came from an alien spacecraft, and that the fact was covered up by the military.
The continuing belief of alien activity in the area led the Air Force to launch an investigation into the crash in 1995.
Officials concluded that the 'UFO' was part of a balloon launched into the atmosphere as part of a secret government surveillance programme aimed at the USSR.
However, many have refused to accept that explanation, alleging a conspiracy to hide the existence of extra-terrestrial life.
On her Facebook page, Miss Marcel eulogized her father in a touching message announcing his passing
'I am so proud to be his daughter,' she wrote on Sunday. 'He had taught me so many things in life and one of the more important things I learned from my Dad was to never back down in the face of adversity.'
She concluded her online tribute with the words: 'although my Dad and Grandpa are no longer with us.... The Roswell Legacy will live on FOREVER!'
Marcel Jr. graduated from medical school at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1961 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1962.

The domain itself had been silently pulled out from under me, and I could never get it nor my hosting company (a privately Virtual Server working as a reseller) I only reclaimed that domain about six months ago, and the site was of course long used, wasted and then tossed aside.
...a very painful but important learning experience, as I'm sure you can imagine. So when it did happen again, and I expected it might one day, I would be able to work to keep my digital presence intact and professionally strong.
